Yea I kinda figured you would say something of that sort Froggy, I graduated high school in 77. Really didn’t care about politics being young and all, history books don’t tell the reality of the loser. So I can’t discuss your point of view from the veteran side of things cause I have no footing. All I can tell you is from the piles of books I have read and the 100’s of articles I have read on what’s going down in our society along with my gifting that this is what I see. True Leaders are seldom seen but their effects are.
Your points are well taken in what you wrote but I have to disagree with certain parts of it. I was involved in some of what was happening in the 60’s and early 70’s and the majority of it had to do with the establishment as it was starting to present itself during those eras. The catalyst at the times was the Viet Nam War and what the politicians of the time had come to make it into – a war without end with a huge military industrial complex driving the train. Economics should never be driving a war machine. I spent the majority of my adult life in the military and still hold that opinion today.
All kinds of “causes” jumped on that train unfortunately. Some were more admirable than others. It wasn’t until much later that those of whom you speak came to be of age to hold the reins of power in this nation. Clinton was the first “boomer” to hold the office of the President. He was but a wolf in sheep’s clothing as have been the others that followed. A different form of “elite” IMHO. The Gores and Bushes are in the same group of those who watched from the sidelines and were politically connected.
I was never opposed to the principles of the founding fathers who established this country. That wasn’t my objection then nor is it now. FAITH, above all else, needs to guide your life. But when you place your faith in an establishment chaired by money hungry, power mongers then it is misplaced faith. It is a misplaced hope as we are presently witnessing.
The tearing down of our social fabric I don’t attribute to the “hippie generation.” Certain things needed to be changed and a try had to be made to change some of what was being done in this country. It really wasn’t very successful though in retrospect. The likes of Nixon comes to mind. Then the pendulum started swinging the other way with Carter, a good man but totally ineffective as a leader. So we hit upon a leader among the many for a long stretch. That was Reagan. I didn’t always agree with everything he did but he led this nation out of some really tumultuous times. He wasn’t a boomer nor was his successor. Both were Cold Warriors.
Clinton was the first opportunist and he was, and still is, a piece of work. There are many boomers evidently who were sitting back and watching those “rebels” raising hell with the system. They are of a different ilk for sure. They became an integral part of the system and cloaked themselves well. They come from different stock than the average American. Take a close look at the names and backgrounds of the people in Congress these days. They have pedigrees. Most are MUTTS anyway but just have the proper papers.
I’m rather disappointed in the boomer generation myself. We have let the opportunity to change a flawed system slip away and it appears that we will continue to do so. We did see the way the pendulum was swinging. We however did nothing about it but keep sending the same MUTTS back over and over again to further the damage. If you think, even for an instant, that any of those Congressional figures care if you receive your social security benefits, medicare benefits, ets. that you’ve been paying into for your entire life then you’ve become part of the problem rather than part of the solution. That’s what has disappointed me about our “boomer” generation. We became absorbed. We let them rape and pillage. We’re continuing to let them do so. That is a huge disappointment to this observer. Where have all the leaders gone? If what we see today is “leadership” then things are extremely grave.
Yes they try to push a building while standing on gravel. Theirs is not a scientific calculated method made with observations, it is the chicken little approach.
Such gravitas is refreshing in this period of insipid shortsightedness. The Longnoses and Butinskis are attempting to construct another tower of Babel ( think global warming legislation ). Since they never bothered to observe what the pendulum was pointing to before they swung it, they have no base line, no standard of reference. This lack of center is the inevitable void in which the political class is mired without hope of rescue.
