Once he was elected in 1998, Chavez rammed through constitutional amendments that concentrated most of the powers of the state in his hands. In the coup de grace against Venezuelan democracy, last year he engineered a “reform” that permits him to seek the presidency indefinitely.

Chavez has urged his acolytes in Bolivia, Ecuador, Honduras and Nicaragua–upon whom he has lavished vast sums of foreign aid–to shove aside constitutional norms to impose their will. That is precisely what Zelaya was attempting to do when he came up against the country’s other democratic institutions, which declared unconstitutional a popular referendum that he hoped would bless his second term.

Specifically, Honduras Electoral Tribunal, Congress, Supreme Court, attorney general and human rights ombudsman each declared Zelaya’s plan unlawful. Undaunted, Zelaya stepped up his populist rhetoric in a bid to whip up the mob against the legal obstacles in his way. It speaks volumes that Zelaya was never able to mobilize large demonstrations. The idea that “Mel” Zelaya thought he deserved a second term left most Hondurans merely mystified.

Waking up on a bright and sunny Independence Day in the good ole’ U.S.A., I pour up some coffee, light a cigarette and pixel up the news to adjust todays attitude. The first thing I see is that Honduras has told the O.A.S. (Organization of American States (does this mean they are ready for annexation?)) to stick it in round brown territory. The reason? The O.A.S. has jumped on the “we cant let the people control their own destiny” band-wagon. I can hardly contain myself as Jimmy Carter Redux’ (that’s O-man) boldly declares that former thug in chief Mr. Zelaya must be immediately reinstated against the orders of the legislature and supreme court of Honduras. The list of leaders calling for Zelaya’s return to usurping authority reads like the same old tired playbook of self righteous “we know what’s best” elitists. Until the people of Honduras wrested leadership of their nation from the local Hugo, was Honduras even on anybody’s radar? Why should the goings on in this tiny little central American nation cause any more than the faintest of blips on the world political scene? I’ll tell you why, because the ability of the “people” through their courts and independent military to enforce the law of the people against a head of state has the world’s leaders shaking in their flip-flops and wiping the sweat off their brow with a nervous hand. I cannot be the only free citizen cheering from the rooftops this morning at the bravery of the Honduran people as they excersize the freedoms that we proclaim as a birthright. Our own election processes are so fraught with calculated error and cheating that more and more the vote ends up one of jurists rather than citizens and that is a crime against freedom. It is a crime because many of our jurists and judges are themselves members of the elitist plutocracy that seeks to set themselves apart from the citizenry in a misguided attempt to exhibit an artificial impartialty. As though people dont know naked when they see it! You dont suppose O-man and his Pinochle partners from around the world are more than a little worried about their own jobs in light of this wanton example of freedom? Had we the bravery of the Honduran people and their courts and military, our own Hugo wannabe would be in irons right now for his fraud against the Constitution of the United States of America. I say viva indenpencia, viva Honduras. As you party on this day of celebration here at home, remember people all over the world are fighting for it at this very moment!

This man showed me the pendant he now wears, a symbol of the ancient religion (it is older than Judaism). This symbol, carried by many of the parade marchers in New York City, can be seen at persianparade.org. Slide # 24 in the 2009 parade is where one can see many beautiful Persian women like Neda….

“I can tell you that Iranians are infuriated with the message, as am I. Iranians do not think that the Islamic regime of Iran is their government. They look at it as an occupying army of Muslim killers determined to destroy what Muhammad and his killers could not do for 1400 years. The mullahs have done all they can to prevent people from celebrating the norooz and a dozen other celebrations such as Charshanbeh soori (the fire festival) for the last 30 yeas. They hate and try to destroy the Iranian culture, like they did in all other previously known Muslim countries. But the more they try to stop the many celebrations in Iran the more the people resist.”
